What Happened to the US Ebola Crisis?
April, 2015 - It struck us the other day that we haven't heard too much about Ebola recently. It was a hot topic last fall, so much so that, if you lived in a state with a competitive US Senate race, you would have thought Ebola was about to sweep the country and that the President was to blame for it.
But, based on news reports, and the lack of interest in the issue within the Congress, that doesn't appear to have been the case. In fact, now that we think about it, doesn't it seem like the Ebola issue pretty much disappeared as soon as the 2014 elections were over? You don't think that's because the Republicans were trying to scare people for political purposes now, do you?
Of course they were.
Once again, the Republicans ran away from most of the real issues, which they know they can't win on, and returned to their old playbook of distortions and scare tactics. They knew that the economy was growing, unemployment was lower than most people thought possible, growth in health care costs was the lowest in decades, more illegal immigrants were being deported under the current administration than under any previous administrations, voters were supporting minimum wage increases, etc. It was tough to campaign against all that.
And having done nothing themselves to help grow the economy, fix our infrastructure, improve health care, address student loan debt, etc., the GOP had no record to run on, so they used issues like the Ebola "crisis" to try and scare us. Too bad it seemed to have worked with some people because we're sure to see that type of desperation again in 2016. When you're afraid to run on your record, your philosophy, or the facts, you aren't left with much else.
