Public Urination Issue Backfires on Boebert...Hilariously
March 2023 - Lauren Boebert is a thirty-six year-old Congresswoman from western Colorado, who is beginning her second term in office. She is best known for promoting unfounded QAnon-type conspiracy theories and for embarrassing herself, and her party, with her consistent lack of knowledge on most issues.
A perfect (and hilarious) example of the latter took place at a recent House hearing dealing with crime in Washington D.C.
As you'll see in the video clip below, Congresswoman Boebert was so intent on scoring some type of a "gotcha" moment against one of the committee witnesses, she couldn't understand that the facts being presented multiple times by the witness contradicted what she thought the facts were. And when one of the other witnesses tried to politely interject and clarify her misunderstanding, she basically told him to shut up.
Add to this the fact that the issue Ms. Boebert decided to focus on was public urination, and that she wanted to continue that discussion even when another Congresswoman was questioning the witness, you get an even funnier video.
There are many YouTube videos of the entire hearing but for the Boebert-related questioning, the most complete and concise clip that we could find is one that includes commentary by comedian Seth Meyers. The Boebert exchange begins at 5:20 of the Meyers video:
Ignoring Ms. Boebert's rather rude and unbecoming behavior, let's simply recap again the basic facts that Ms. Boebert didn't seem to understand:
- The District of Columbia City Council recently passed legislation to change the District's Criminal Code, but there was no change with respect to public urination. It continued to be considered a criminal offense.
- The U.S. Congress, which has some jurisdiction over the District of Columbia, did not agree with the Criminal Code package approved by the D.C. City Council and passed legislation reversing the City Council's changes. (Legislation that Ms. Boebert voted in favor of, by the way.)
- President Biden signed that Congressional bill, which was required for the legislation to become law. Consequently, the D.C. Criminal Code changes did not go into effect.
As unintentionally humorous as Ms. Boebert's performance was, it was depressing at the same time. Not only is she not up to the job of being a Congresswoman (in our opinion), but with so many important issues needing to be addressed by the Congress (including critical water issues in western Colorado), Ms. Boebert decided to focus on something that was a non-issue.
One is tempted to say that these other important issues may be too complex for Ms. Boebert to understand, so she decided to focus on an issue she could understand. But it turns out she couldn't even understand that one.
