Right Wing Myth-Busting
Limbaugh the Entertainer
Although Rush Limbaugh likes to call himself a comedian or an entertainer, we all know that he's really a part of the far right propaganda machine. He wouldn't give free airtime to just right wing politicians, or show up regularly at the Conservative Political Action Committee conventions, or regularly mislead you about Democratic positions if his goal was simply to provide his audience with entertainment.
Listening to Limbaugh for a couple hours on any given day probably would generate enough distortions, half-truths, and outright lies to fill a whole article. Particularly when you hear Limbaugh start off one of his rants with "Liberals believe..." That's a surefire indication that what's coming next isn't going to be accurate.
Of course, the reason he has to resort to these kinds of statements is that most of his positions can't stand up to the real facts. So he'll just make up stories and "straw men" to try and make his positions seem reasonable and preferable. And that's what makes him so dangerous to legitimate political dialogue in this country - too many people take what he says as accurate, without looking to an objective source to check his assertions.
Pretty much the rest of right-wing talk radio falls in this same category. For the moment, then, if you must listen to Fox or any right-wing talk radio, take what you hear with a big grain of salt and take the time to independently confirm what you hear. Find someone on the other side to listen to as well, or talk to us; you'll get the real story and be able to make a more informed decision on the issues.
