News Media Misses Bigger Picture in Sasha/Malia Flap
December 2014 - In the justifiable flap caused by a GOP Congressional aide being publicly mean-spirited to the President's daughters, the media again played it safe by downplaying the ridiculous comments the aide also made about the President and the First Lady.
In her Facebook commentary that criticized presidential daughters Malia and Sasha, Elizabeth Lauten, Communications Director to Congressman Stephen Fincher (R-Tenn) and reportedly a previous new media manager for the Republican National Committee, also made the following statement that almost passed under the news media's radar:
"Then again, your mother and father don't respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I'm guessing you're coming up a little short in the 'good role model' department."
Has our nation's psyche become so numb or jaded to the far right's continuous anger and mean-spiritedness that such a baseless and juvenile assertion can pass as politics as usual? Perhaps the mainstream media believes that, but we don't think so and are pleased to call out Ms. Lauten for her classless behavior.
{Ms. Lauten's subsequent statements indicating that she spent hours in prayer and talking with her family after the blowback erupted also are worthy of analysis (what type of religious upbringing would allow her to make such comments in the first place?), but we'll save that discussion for another day.}
