Dying for Netanyahu? Or Epstein? Why Did Trump Attack Iran?
March 2026 - After campaigning in 2024 as the peace candidate, taking pride in having kept the United States out of war during his first term in office, and having condemned foreign wars and nation building (particularly in the Middle East), Donald Trump apparently changed his mind. He decided to commit the U.S. military (without Congressional approval) to join with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in attacking Iran, killing many of Iran's top leaders, and then stated that he (Mr. Trump) wants to choose Iran's new head of state.
Wow, something big must have happened to cause Mr. Trump to flip-flop so dramatically on one of the key planks in his "America First" platform. Particularly since multilateral negotiations with Iran on many outstanding issues were actively taking place, and other Arab states were indicating that progress was being made in those talks.
Unfortunately, we still don't know the answer. America and the world continue to sort through the numerous conflicting stories presented by Mr. Trump and his administration as to why, once again, the United States has gone to war in the Middle East.
To many observers, it comes across as if Mr. Trump and his team have been floating different stories in the hope they land on one that the American people are willing to buy. So far, none of those explanations seem very convincing, though. All of which makes most people believe the real reason for going to war simply is not something Mr. Trump wishes to divulge.

Here are some of the reasons presented by the U.S. government for Mr. Trump's Iranian war:
- We oppose the Iranian government's crackdown on the internal Iranian protestors who are demanding more freedom within Iran. But repressive governments all over the world regularly take action against dissidents. Why take out the Iranian leaders as opposed to the leaders of those other countries? (Some of whom already have nuclear weapons.)
- The Iranians are close to developing a nuclear weapon and long-range delivery capabilities. But in 2025, Israel and the U.S. bombed numerous Iranian weapons sites, after which Mr. Trump said those actions "obliterated" Iran's nuclear capabilities. Hmm…Iran must have some really good scientists, engineers, etc. if they're already, once again, within weeks or months of developing nuclear weapons. Or were we terribly misled by the Trump administration last year?
- The Israelis were going to attack Iran with or without us and, if attacked by Israel, Iran would try to hit U.S. assets. Why? Israel regularly attacks targets within the Middle East and the U.S. only peripherally gets blamed for those actions. Not many Americans are buying this excuse, either.
- Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States. No details have been provided as to what that imminent threat was. In fact, not only have numerous people challenged that statement, but Joe Kent, head of U.S. Counter Terrorism Center within the Trump administration, resigned his position saying there was no imminent threat. (After Mr. Kent's resignation, Mr. Trump said Mr. Kent was "weak on security" and was glad Mr. Kent had left his position. This begs the questions of why Mr. Trump appointed Mr. Kent to that position in the first place and why Mr. Kent was still in that position if he was weak on security.)
It also is worth noting that Former Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently said that Mr. Netanyahu had asked Presidents Obama and Biden in years past to join him in attacking Iran. Both Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden told Mr. Netanyahu no and pushed him not to go ahead with those plans.
All of this leaves Americans confused and angry as to why Mr. Trump agreed to join the Netanyahu attack on Iran. Which, of course, leads to speculation as to the real reason for Mr. Trump's actions. Here are some of the popular reasons being suggested:
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has something on Mr. Trump and threatened to expose him if Mr. Trump didn't join in the Iran War. What might that something be? Many speculate that it is a smoking gun tying Mr. Trump either to crimes related to Jeffrey Epstein's pedophile ring or to corruption with other Arab states.

- Even if the Israelis have no Epstein-related evidence against Mr. Trump, many believe that the war on Iran was Mr. Trump's way to divert attention from the Epstein affair. The slow release of the Epstein documents is, at best, not showing Mr. Trump in a favorable light and many believe that Mr. Trump did commit crimes with underage women.
- Attacking Iran was another opportunity for Mr. Trump and/or Trump insiders to grift the financial markets. War itself, plus the resulting interruption of the world's oil supply, combined with prior knowledge of Mr. Trump's frequent hawkish or dovish tweets/announcements could leave plenty of opportunity for insider trading at many levels.
At this point, we'll just have to wait and see whether any additional clarity comes out as to why we have gone to war at this time. With the war not going as expected for the Israeli/U.S. side, and Mr. Trump falling back on his usual blustering threats of mass destruction, perhaps the Republican Congress finally will get a backbone and put a stop to what appears, at this point, to be an unwarranted attack on Iran.
(Another interesting question being discussed is why Mr. Netanyahu chose to attack Iran at this time. While we haven't kept a close watch on Israeli politics, many have suggested that it was the only way Mr. Netanyahu could stay in power, avoid corruption charges, and stay out of prison. Others have suggested that he is trying to expand the Israeli state within the Middle East. We'll leave that discussion for others at this point and hope that cooler heads begin to prevail before this war escalates further.)
