Our Favorite Pro-Gun Democrats
State Senator Jason Carter (Georgia)
Jason Carter is a 9th generation Georgian who served for over four years in the Georgia State Senate and was the 2014 Democratic candidate for Governor in Georgia. Still in his early forties, Mr. Carter and his wife Kate (a school teacher and former journalist) are the parents of two young sons. During his twenties, Jason spent time in the Peace Corps and then returned to Georgia to study law. He currently is a partner at an Atlanta law firm and serves as Chair of the Carter Center.
With respect to the Senator's position on gun rights, you may recall the controversial gun legislation that was passed by the Georgia legislature during the summer of 2014. It allowed all licensed gun owners to carry in public places. We believe the bill got a lot of misleading press, but Senator Carter supported the bill, as did we.
It's the economy, though, that Jason rightly focused on in his campaign for Governor that year. Under the state's Republican leadership, Georgia's unemployment rate had fallen to worst in the nation. Mr. Carter recognized, and continues to recognize, that education, small business, and the middle class are keys to a state's long-term economic health.
That's why, as Senator, Jason supported a separate education budget that can't be raided by conservative politicians trying to make a name for themselves under the euphemism of "fiscal responsibility". For his tax proposals and business incentives, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce awarded him an 'A' rating and he was endorsed by the National Federation for Independent Business. Jason knows that building a strong middle class is what will carry the Georgia economy forward into the future.
With respect to the Senator's character and ethical values, we'll start by mentioning his championing of legislation to bring transparency to government, to put a cap on political gifts from lobbyists, and to reform the sham re-districting games that the Republicans played in 2010. Sounds like our kind of guy. But we'll also remind you that Jason is the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter.
When we think of the Carters, the first thing that comes to mind is their religious and moral values. While President Carter has taken political positions that we agreed with and others that we disagreed with, no public figures in recent memory live their values like Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. They don't build mansions to themselves, they don't think they're better than anyone else, and they don't preach hate. Rather, they live a simple life, doing good deeds around the world through the work of the Carter Center. Jason can be proud to have had Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter as grandparents and as role models.
There are a many Georgians who have been talking about Jason when it comes to the Governor's race in 2018. We hope he will consider entering the political arena again and we will be happy to throw our support behind him if and when he does.
{Having spoken of former President Jimmy Carter, we would be remiss if we did not mention his book, "An Hour Before Daylight", which chronicles his boyhood years and describes what life was like growing up in the rural South during the Depression. It is one of the most enjoyable books we've read in a while, and one we strongly recommend.}
