Right Wing Myth-Busting
Was Saddam Hussein Behind the 9/11 Attacks?
As late as 4-5 years after the after the Iraqi War started, a Newsweek poll showed close to 40% of Americans still believed that Saddam had some involvement with the 9/11 attacks. And if you identified yourself as a regular viewer of Fox "News", polling conducted by the Program for International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland found you were three times more likely to believe this than non-Fox viewers.
While no member of the George W. Bush administration has come out and actually stated that Saddam was involved with 9/11, some officials (including VP Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld) were rather coy about it and there have been plenty of far right talking heads who tried to tie Bin Laden, al-Qaida, etc. with Saddam.
But the bi-partisan Congressional panel that investigated 9/11 found no such link and even President Bush has denied that Saddam was involved. Maybe when we find Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction we'll find some emails between Bin Laden and Saddam too.
